MangoMania
Pine Island's 12th annual MangoMania, held July 12 and 13, takes tropical fruit to a whole new level.

MangoMania Tropical Fruit Fair
MangoMania Tropical Fruit Fair
What’s the best part of the MangoMania Tropical Fruit Fair? For the kids, it may be the Mr. Mangohead (a Florida version of Mr. Potato Head) decorating contest or the child-parent Mango Toss. Or maybe it’s the hat parade. For those slightly more grown-up, it’s tasting all things mango – ice cream, preserves, milkshakes, cakes, cookies and other imaginative dishes using Southwest Florida’s favorite exotic fruit. There’s even a mango pie-eating contest for the seriously mango-crazed.

Pine Island celebrates its trademark summer crop with two days devoted entirely to the sweet, messy, juicy fruit whose distinctive flavor some describe as a cross between peach, coconut and strawberry. Besides mangos, visitors can savor other locally grown exotics including lychee, longan, papaya, guava and black sapote, a.k.a. “chocolate pudding fruit." Growers sell exotic fruit trees and offer advice on tropical fruit gardening. Locals compete in mango juggling and the World’s Largest Mango Contest.

Live music takes the stage, and children’s rides and games entertain the kids throughout the weekend. Island restaurants sell other specialties, and vendors peddle arts and crafts.

The fun starts at 10 a.m. at the German-American Social Club at 2101 Pine Island Road and continues until 4 p.m. both days. Admission is $6 for adults, free for children ages 10 and younger. For more information, call 239-283-0888 or visit www.floridascreativecoast.com.
